Landform Investigators Program Overview

Naturalist looking at rocksIn this series of four sessions offered individually, fourth graders will be introduced to topography and map reading skills in relation to the landforms around in the first session.  The three following sessions will each focus on one or more landforms and how the earth’s surface is always changing.

Session 1:  Intro to topography

Nature LIVE! Session 1 Sign Up - Offered in September, October and February

DESCRIPTION: During this 20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks!  Together with your students they will investigate contour lines on topographical maps and using their own ball point pen even create a spectacular mountain range on their knuckles. The students will learn how to read these lines and decipher what landforms they can portray. Since this in an introduction session, not required before the others, but recommended as a prerequisite, please contact us if you would like to schedule it outside of the times offered. Session 2:  Cave and Falls

Nature LIVE! Session 2 Sign Up - Offered in November, December and February

DESCRIPTION:  During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks!  Together your students will be introduced to the concepts of weathering, erosion, deposition and the roll these play in forming landforms.  They will get a chance to explore a cave and marvel at our 37’ waterfall, comparing these landforms to the topography from the map of this park.  This session also has a tailored review quiz for your students and the Weathering, Erosion, Deposition SCIENCE JOURNEY material will support the same standards.  Click the session title above to book your session with a naturalist!

Session 3:  Hill and River Valley

DESCRIPTION: During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks!  Together your students will investigate gravitational force and how this is so important to the forming of both a hill and river valley.  We will review our key concepts from the past two sessions of topography, weathering, erosion, and deposition, and we will experiment with gravity using objects on hand at school or home.  This session also has a tailored review quiz for your students and the Weathering, Erosion, Deposition SCIENCE JOURNEY material will support the same standards.  Click the session title above to book your session with a naturalist!

Session 4:  Plains and Moraines

DESCRIPTION: During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks! Together with your students we will use our bodies individually to demonstrate how plains can form, reinforcing the weathering, erosion, and deposition occurrences.
