Roots, Stems, Leaves Program Overview

 

Naturalist showing a pumpkin in front of a camera.Third graders will make observations of plant life cycles through the seasons as they participate in these six sessions that are offered individually. Each session will focus on one of the six main plant parts and on topics such as how each part plays a role in the survival and reproduction of that individual, the functions of the plant parts themselves, and observations of plant life cycles over time.

Session 1: Fruit in the Garden

Nature LIVE! Session 1 Sign Up - Offered in September and October

DESCRIPTION:  During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from the garden at Lost Creek Reserve! Together with the naturalist your students will explore the garden finding the six plant parts and experience the growing process complete from seed. Session 2: Seeds Everywhere

DESCRIPTION: During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks! Together explorations will be made for the six plant parts out in the wild. Seeds will be our focus plant part of the day as we discover more about the amazing traveling seed and how it travels. Session 3: The Reason for Leaves

Nature LIVE! Session 3 Sign Up - Offered in October and November

DESCRIPTION: During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks! Students will be instructed to come prepared to this session by bringing with them 3 different kinds of leaves that have already fallen off of a plant.  Leaves will be our focus plant part of the day.  Together we will investigate why leaves fall off this time of year and if that gives the plant an advantage for survival.  This session also has a tailored review quiz for your students and the Roots SCIENCE JOURNEY material will support the same standards.  Click the session title above to book your session with a naturalist!

Session 4: Sweet Stems 

Nature LIVE! Session 4 Sign Up - Offered in February and March

DESCRIPTION:  During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from Maple Ridge Reserve!  Stems will be the focus plant part of this session.  Together we will go on a journey up and down the stem of a plant, learning first hand the job of the stem as we study the maple sugaring process. Session 5: Unseen Roots

Nature LIVE! Session 5 Sign Up - Offered in March and April

DESCRIPTION: During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will lead the session from one of our many Miami County Parks!  Together with your naturalist you will visit some of the same plants you were introduced to in session 2: Seeds Everywhere.  Students will get to compare and contrast the life stages of these plants and notice which plant parts are present, and which ones are absent.  The unseen roots will be our focus plant part of the day, learning their function and roll in the plants’ survival.  This session also has a tailored review quiz for your students and the Roots SCIENCE JOURNEY material will support the same standards.  Click the session title above to book your session with a naturalist!

Nature LIVE! Session 6 Sign Up - Offered in April and May

DESCRIPTION: During this  20 minute online adventure, your naturalists will once again lead the session from the garden at Lost Creek Reserve!  So much can be discovered in a garden. A new season with new plants and new life blooming.  Explore the job of a flower and how it is made as you join along with the naturalist to take a closer look inside of a flower and all of its parts.
