Miami
County Park District Wins in Triplicate
The Miami
County Park District is pleased to announce that three of its
entries for the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association Awards of
Excellence have won 1st place.
“Watershed
Rock and Roll with Rowlands,” Category 11, Youth Programs and
Events, Ages 6 to 11 and entered by Cinda Hanbuch
Pinkerton, Director of Environmental Education for the Miami
County Park District, engages elementary students in
exciting water studies programs combining the use of hands-on
outdoor studies, classroom activities and the creation of
watershed focused songs and art projects.
The ultimate
goal is to engage the students in learning what a watershed is
and how activities within their communities and in their own
backyards, affect the quality of water used in their everyday
lives. The students then engage their own families and
communities in the awareness process through creative musical
and art presentation and participation in a community-wide
watershed festival.
The second
OPRA Award of Excellence winning article is for Category 3,
Park Area Development, and “Hobart Urban Nature Preserve”
and was entered by Janeen Selanders, Executive Coordinator for
the Miami County Park District.
The opening of
the Hobart Urban Nature Preserve was the result of the dream and
generosity of the Hobart family and diligence of the Miami
County Park District. By converting an 80 acre highly
developable parcel of farmland to a passive recreational and
environmental jewel for Miami County, the citizens can enjoy
native Ohio habitats such as prairie, forest, wetlands and
headwater stream corridors. Add to that, a beautiful blend of
country and city with a cordon steel entrance sign, serpentine
stone wall amid a blossoming prairie as you enter the park’s
country lane. Immediately your attention is diverted to the
first of four metal sculptures to be found within the acres of
varying habitats, combining the country and city, modern art and
nature.
The “Nature
News” Cable TV Series, submitted by Elizabeth McClure,
Public Relation Coordinator and Program Coordinator, was awarded
1sr place in Category 21, Marketing –Broadcast Media.
The Miami
County Park District’s plans for an informative cable TV program
culminated in the main goal of the cable which can be seen on
Troy, Tipp City and Piqua cable channels during one of the last
two weeks of every month and continues into the next month to
promote the free public programming offered by the Park District
during that month. This taped live presentation is done by the
environmental educators and staff who participate in leading the
free park events in the various parks in the county every month.
The main goal
of the series is to inform the public about their Miami County
Parks’ upcoming free public events for the next month and to
keep them informed about other news from the Park District
including the Environmental Education programs going on in the
schools and in the parks that their children or grandchildren
may be participating in through the public school programs.
Written notes are sent to all parents to inform them of when
they might see their children performing in one of the school
programs, filmed for the cable TV Series.
Other Park
District news, broadcast during the monthly series, may include
new park openings, new trails, improved facilities, changes in
the availability of the parks open to the public due to extreme
weather conditions, and answer questions that have come to the
Park District and are of interest to the viewing audience, to
name a few.
The 2007
winners were recognized at the 2008 OPRA Conference Awards
dinner on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Crowned Plaza in
Dayton.

The Healthy
Lifestyle initiative is focused on developing increased opportunities for
physical activity in Ohio and creating local community coalitions to
develop programs, facilities and infrastructure to support a more active
lifestyle. The first Healthy Lifestyle Summit, held in February 2007,
kicked off a year of collaboration throughout Ohio to ultimately build a
statewide physical activity plan to combat the obesity and sedentary
lifestyle issues in Ohio. Click the link above to learn more.
New Bridge
for Creek Crossing at Charleston Falls
The Park has
completed of a new bridge at Charleston Falls Preserve over Charleston
Creek at the lower creek crossing. Previously, it was necessary to use
the large stepping stones or wade across.
The bridge itself,
constructed by Lavy Construction, is made from treated lumber and
matches the architecture of the other bridges at Charleston Falls
Preserve. The bridge is approximately 30 feet long and is designed for
foot traffic only. The bridge will make it much easier for the
public to cross the water; leaving the stepping stones for the
more adventurous hikers.
